What inspired this need for a winddown routine?

Recently, I was talking to Bee Eye about his wind down routine. He told me about how he turns his devices off by a certain time; his light-blocking glasses, spoon of honey, his hot shower. How he tries to be asleep by the same time every night, and wake at the same time. How it was like he was winding down his nervous system, and getting ready for sleep.

I felt a lot of resonance with this, and realized I would benefit from my own similar routine.

I wanted to take a similar strategy—wind down the nervous system—but I needed different, tasshin-shaped tactics.

I’m sure I’ll keep evolving it, but I found a winddown routine that’s been working for me.

My current routine involves several stages: World Environment Mind Heart Imagination Gut.

Here’s each of these stages:

  • World: Wrap up whatever’s on my mind and heart by taking notes, sending messages, finishing up work.
  • Environment: Tidy the space, set alarm, establish quiet & dark.
  • Body: Floss and brush teeth. Do some stretching if that would feel good. Take a bath or hot shower to get warm.
  • Mind: ask myself The Three Questions as a Mindful Review Technique
  • Heart: Give myself encouragement, send metta, do prayer.
  • Imagination: visualization of positive futures, connection to imagination/story. Remember my novel, or imagine positive futures, or simply tell myself a bedtime story.
  • Gut: make sure my body is warm, begin to slow my body, become still and quiet so my body can rest even if it’s not falling asleep yet.

Get rest even if I don’t get sleep.

I imagine I’ll iterate this over time, but this is my current version.
