The internet cannot handle nuance. It prefers black-and-white hot takes to complex, nuanced, lukewarm grey-area takes. If you say something critical, it gets boiled down to “bad.” If you say something affirming or positive, it gets boiled down to “good.”

As a society, as a culture, we don’t seem to me to be very good at nuance or complexity.

And yet, my perspectives on many issues are nuanced, are complex, are subtle. They’re not simple. They’re not black-and-white.

Yes, I have criticisms. Yes, I have praise and gratitude and appreciation! I have both!

So generally, I don’t write about nuanced topics, especially on Twitter. If I must speak on such topics, I take to essays and longform writing.

It would be much easier to talk about many things if I thought they were unequivocally good or bad. But my perspectives aren’t that simple.
